Staff Forum Minutes for January 14, 2010

Attendance: Amy Lister, Laura Walsh, Kendra Linkous, Terri Jackson, Leslie Holler, Jim Woolard, Norm Holmes, John Weaver, David I. • Opened the meeting with the trivia question.
Monthly Hosts- Development office and Library
• Library: Tauni Graham
o Susan Scott is the director of the library. John Crissinger and Will McElhaney are the librarians and help with collection development. Scott Bates works on weekends and focuses on serials. Shawn Brookbank is the evening Supervisor. Tauni Graham does everything else.
o Library asks that staff members not tell students that text books are housed in the library. There are some but not all.
o The study rooms located on the second floor of the library are reserved solely through the library. The rooms are available as walk in as long as it is not already reserved, or it can be reserved. They can be reserved for 4-hour blocks.
o The library has a cookbook collection, a classic movie collection as well as some extra materials available to borrow.
• Development: Laura Walsh
o Jennifer Roberts is the Director of Development.
o Laura is her assistant.
o There is currently an opening for an assistant director.
o There is a student worker through the WIA program. Joy has been a great help.
o The development office is the face of the office for philanthropic support. It also assists with Alumni Relations.

New Business:
• Career Fair: Derek Thatcher
o Annual Career Fair Tuesday 2/23 from 11-2 in the Adena Gymnasium.
o Open to current students and Alumni of COTC and OSUN.
o First year students are encouraged to attend.
o Why should a student attend a career fair?
 Students who use the career center fair better than those who do not.
o There will be a new logo for the career development office.
o Volunteers are needed on Monday afternoon and the day of the fair, Tuesday.
o What do employers look for in candidates?
 Looking at GPA, leadership experience, major, extracurricular experiences, school attended and volunteer work.
o Please spread the word about the Career Fair to students.
o Question: Do many students plan on receiving jobs from this fair? Answer: Yes. The fair began as an allied health fair and it has grown since. The office uses feedback from students to make sure this career fair benefits them.
• Center for Academic Success (CAS): Bruce Weaver
o The CAS is an umbrella under which there is a presence here on the Newark campus as well as all of the extended campuses.
o Math Lab- All campuses
 1,384 students visited during Autumn quarter 2009.
 Courses most inquired are: 100, 1210, 1215
o Education Media and Resource Center (Newark campus only)
 Serves Early childhood development
o Communications Resource Center (CRC)- Writing Lab, Speech Lab- All campuses
 802 students visited during Autumn Quarter 2009.
o ABLE- Adult Basic Literacy and Education (Newark Campus only)
 Support for developmental education before pre-college courses
 Monday-Thursday evenings
o The CAS works closely with the tutoring center.
o The CAS is here to help all students regardless of their performance in their classes. They can help students that are in academic distress or the B student that wants to be an A student.

Development Office: Laura Walsh
• Looking for nominations for the Outstanding Alumni Award given during the June commencement.
o Forms are available on the web site (http://www.cotc.edu/alumni/alumni-awards/Pages/index.aspx).
o Please return forms by March 5th, 2010.
• Central Ohio Technical College 40th Anniversary celebration will take place throughout 2011.
o If you have any ideas, please contact Jennifer Roberts.
o Kickoff will be January 29, 2011.
o The kickoff for internal employees will be during Faculty Development days and also the annual Welcome Batch luncheon.
• There will be a cost-shared campaign during the autumn quarter.
Dining Services: Joe DiPaolo
• Working with Columbus to reduce prices and streamline production in the Table of Contents during spring quarter.
• The Operations Manager job position will be reposted. Hopefully there will be someone permanently in the position by summer 2011.
• There will be more updates in February.
Facilities: Jim Woolard
• COTC purchased the Grand Host East facility in early January. Classes will begin there in the spring.
• Ariel Hall will be renovated. Construction will run from June 2010-2011.
• Founders and Hopewell Renovation duration will be one and half years. This will begin in spring this year.
• Safety and Security
o There is plenty of parking for students.
o Students are being ticketed for parking in Faculty and Staff parking.
o Be very careful of black ice.
o Sanitizer program will continue despite the fact that it is costly.
• A suggestion was made to have security visible in the parking lots during the lunch hour so that students are further discouraged from parking in faculty/staff spots.
• Terri Jackson mentioned that once a quarter, she sends batteries off to be recycled and that she will take other staff members’ batteries on the day that they will be sent off (but please not before that).
• Corri Edwards thanked Facilities for making everything on campus look so great.
Human Resources: Sherry Abbott
• Personnel Update (listed at the end of the minutes)
• Please read the Insurance and Dependents email from Jackie Parrill.
o If you have dependents, you will receive a packet from the third party.
o Failure to complete this paperwork will result in indefinitely terminating your dependents from your health insurance.
• There will be a health screening in March.
• There will be training for Hiring Managers on January 26th.
• Massage therapist will be here in February.
Information Technology Services: Kasia Wilson
• Thanked everyone for their participation on the 5 digit dialing transition.
• Mike Drobnack is now a full time, permanent staff member on campus.
• There is an opening at the Help Desk and the job description will be posted soon.
• TelCenter will be announcing the professional development schedule later this week or next week.
o There will be Microsoft, ANGEL and Carmen training.
Library:

Marketing:

OSU Admissions and Advising: Amy Lister
• There are 2,200 students enrolled.
• Recruitment for spring, summer and autumn is already occurring.
Purchasing:
No representative present.
Safety and Security: Mike Neff
• Make sure you have a parking tag displayed in your vehicle.
• The office is now able to perform National and Local background checks.
Services Center: Sue Bidwell
• If you have bulk mailings please call ahead.
Staff Development: Tauni Graham
• Game Day is today.
• February is soup and chili cook-off.
o You can either bring soup and chili or you can come enjoy it.
Student Life: Derek Thatcher
• DISCOVER software is up and running at the extended campuses.
o DISCOVER is designed to assist students looking at their career options.
• Kelvin Yarrington, extension 69184, is the VITA representative. VITA will be offering free tax preparation to members of the community here on campus.
• Please share any comments or suggestions about the transition to semesters as it would relate to student life.
Staff and Faculty Opportunities: Leslie Holler (reported after meeting adjournment)
• If you haven’t had the opportunity to sign up for the Pedometer Challenge, please email Marilyn Lees.
o The challenge is for winter quarter.
• There will be another orientation on how to use the equipment in the Adena Gymnasium. More information to come.
