Staff Forum Minutes: July 8, 2010

• Introduced Suzanne Bressoud, vice chair and Francesca Amigo, secretary. Thanks to previous Staff Forum officers Corri (not present), Jasmin, and Julie.
• Sue mentioned the yellow sheets on tables, asking people to check their hosting assignments, and if they want to change them to please let her know;
• Noted schedule of meetings for the year; all in WC platform; except possibly the “town meeting,” which needs to be set.
• Staff forum: not a gripe session; not for gossip; it’s a time to get to know colleagues, introduce, mingle new folks with old-timers; and get updates.

New business: None.

Area updates:


Academic Labs: Terri: end of each quarter they do waste disposal; next pickup is middle to end of august – batteries, chemical waste, etc. – contact Terri by email. Do not take it to her yet! NO MATERIAL FROM HOME – campus only. Next pickup is December.
Rose Hart: can we use the battery dumpsters around campus? JIM: No – contact Terri.

Business and Accounting Office: Nobody present

Career Services: Derek is on vacation

Child development Center: Nobody present.

COTC Gateway: Nobody present.

Development Office: Heather Warnecke
o Reese’s gift – Matching Gift Challenge - $10 million, April 2010 – June 2012. Matched dollar for dollar.

Dining services: Damon Cappel
o Hours at Cyber CafĂ© have been fluctuating as they try to figure out traffic times. 7:30 am – noon, Mon-Thurs.; Table of Contents: 7 am – 3 pm. Probably close right before autumn quarter begins to train staff, will let us know closer.

• Human Resources: Sherri Abbott
o Lunch & learn workshop: sugar vs. sweetener. 11:30 – 12:30, next Thursday; points eligible. Contact Patsy to register.
o Personal health assessments: Must be done once a year for $20 premium reduction – don’t forget to complete!
o Personnel updates (see list at end of minutes).

• Information Technology Services: Julie Ketner
o Hiring classroom support person & resource management people – Howard sent email to campus, encouraging people to attend open sessions.

• Library: Tauni Graham
o Has NY Times Best sellers
o Has classics on DVD
o Putting up a jigsaw puzzle from underground railroad museum.

• Marketing & Public Relations: Alice Hutzel-Bateson
o Thanks to all involved in COTC spring commencement
o Mark calendars for Wed. Sept. 15th – annual cost-shared luncheon 11:30 – 1pm in Reese Center
o MPR is here to assist with any projects that you need help with – flyers, etc. Please involve the dept. early on.

• OSU Admissions & Advising: C.R. Barclay
o Enrollment: summer 2010, we’re on projection; headcount 600 (give or take 10); autumn on target 1350 for new students; overall projection 2625
o Currently doing weekly orientations; 20-25 students signing up for classes; planning for incoming class of 2011 has begun
o Mark Begley (Franklin County & East Fairfield) has huge load, be kind; CR has 725 students
o This year we have a very diverse group – CR = Dayton & Cincinnati; more and more students are making Newark campus their 2nd choice
o June 30 was Karen Prost’s last day; currently taking apps for that position. Karen will return on part-time basis in autumn.
o Teresa McKinney, fees & deposits: suggested that we have a gift certificate for when students have extra money that cannot be put toward their fees /tuition.

• Purchasing: Nobody present.

• Safety & Security: Jim Woolard
o Opened Pataskala campus; remodeling space in Pataskala; YMCA = 4 classrooms
o Building parking lot near LeFevre Hall
o Paving university drive over summer. Closing bridge on bike path to clean and sandblast bridge.
o There will be traps along path – trying to clear out the muskrats; they took out 30 muskrats the first 3 days.
o Ariel hall: budget approved, going to board of trustees for approval. Founders Hall: water well; master schedule available soon – Jeremy Pursley working on this; will have schedule for spring now; classrooms for next fall – lower level of founders will be classrooms – psych labs; also spaces in Reese Center.
o New RECYCLING cans this week – more info coming from Rose.
o Alice H-B: when are we vacating church in Pataskala? JIM: no decisions made yet.
o Sue: when will psych labs be ready? JIM: September 1; labs in Hopewell autumn quarter.

• Services Center: Sue Bidwell
o Last weekend, Norm had the carpet cleaned – thanks!
o Order your large quantities now – it’s a slow time; in early September they’re working on material for faculty. Give about a week turnaround.

• Staff Development: Candi Sheridan
o July 20 Tuesday, after work: Family picnic in rotary pavilion; potluck, details coming soon; everyone welcome.
o Scavenger hunt: August – date to be announced. Please look for unusual items.

• Student Life: Elaine Stevens
o Recognize Sue Foster, housing director, who is retiring
o Lance Ginn is replacement from Columbus

• Sue Bidwell:
1. WELCOME to Rosemary Saliba as new director of institutional research for COTC;
ROSEMARY: drilling into data and generating data reports from areas to increase info for decision making, instructional purposes.
