Staff Forum Minutes for October 8, 2009

Monthly Hosts- Student Life

Student Life Introduction: John Berry
• Would like to thank the team for their hard work and diligence.

New Business:
• Vista Volunteers and Access Initiative: Katey Borland & Tara Houdeshell
o Last January OSU Newark and COTC applied to have AmeriCorps Vista come to campus to work on access initiatives.
o Jena Pugh works with Tara at COTC
o Katie Rappaport works with Katey at OSU
o Denison, COTC and OSUN are all teaming together to work on access initiatives
o Access Initiatives are designed to make post secondary education possible for youth regardless of
o Access- 4 points:
 Awareness- Make sure Licking County knows that we are here
 Aspiration- Work with youth to encourage them to aspire to attend college
 Preparedness—Taking the right academic courses to be ready for college-level work
 Financing- Make it affordable and give understanding of financial aid and saving for college
o Newark City School system is the third in the state for the lowest graduation rate
o High poverty levels in Licking County
o Over half of the Newark City Schools students that go to college after high school are first generation students.
o Five institutions have formed partnership in a program called “Can Do Access”
o PEAK program- elementary/middle school
 College aspiration, Reading Literacy
 LeFevre students work along with this program.
o Another program called “Blueprint College” & “College Camp”
 Financial programs designed educate parents (Blueprint) about saving for college. The students will learn about aspects of college in College Camp.
o Big Brothers Big Sisters
 1 hour per week commitment
 Fun, easy way to get involved in the community
o Anyone with ideas, questions are encouraged to get in touch with anyone from the group. Borland.19@osu.edu, etc.
• United Way: John Berry
o It is the time of year for United Way fundraising.
o The campaign October 19-30
o Slogan is “Live United”
o Giving $1/week 2 pints of blood
o Giving $2 magazine, 2 individuals to crisis individual
o 2 round trips to medical clinics
o Campus goal is $11,000
o Information will be sent out before the 19th
• COTC Gateway Employee Update: Susan Jaeger
o DiAnna Palmer- promoted as a new Admissions Rep and Academic Advising.
• OSU Admissions Office Update: Mark Fegley
o Good news, as of Monday 2459 paid students which surpasses the expectations.
o Buckeye Visit days start October 14th

o If you know of prospective students and families that would like to visit, please direct them to www.newark.osu.edu. Tell them to click on “Future Students” then “Visit Campus”
• Corri for Sandy Sturman and Dr. MacDonald
o Gee will be on campus 1:30-2 on November 9th.
o Looking for ideas of what to do during that time (other than the usual Q&A)
• Corri for Sherry Abbott
o Reminder that the benefits fair will be October 21 from 10-1
o There will be Flu shots, bone density screening, skin screenings, and hearing screenings
o Open Enrollment October 25-November 6
o HR is currently implementing the online application (for employment) process for COTC

Area Updates:

Career Services: Derek Thatcher
• Transfer Fair Wednesday, November 4th on 11:00-1:00 in Warner
o Primarily focused on COTC students that are looking to continue on to a Bachelor’s degree.
o There are also representatives of post grad/ graduate opportunities that would interest OSU.

Development Office: No representative present

Facilities/Project Manager: Dan Longstreth
• No updates

Human Resources: Corri Edwards presented updates during “New Business”

ITS: Kasia Wilson & Corri Edwards
• Most Fall quarter projects are completed. If ITS was working on something for you and it’s still not done, please give a gentle poke.
• First call resolution rate has greatly increased this year:
o Last year 1095, 56% first call resolution rates.
o This year 1911, 78% first call resolution rates.
• Thanks to the helpdesk staff for doing a great job this year
• The main focus will be computer refresh
o If you think you’re due, call the help desk to make sure that you’re on the list.
• Question: what is the process with receiving email confirmations of tickets?
o Right now not all tickets/confirmation are emailed to the customer.
o If you don’t get the message, it does not mean that your ticket was lost, it just means that it didn’t get emailed.
• The websites are up and running
• There will be trainings on how to update your web page
• The IT professional development calendar will be published this week
o There will be some new items: Outlook, Microsoft Word 2007,
o If you’re interested in Excel and other programs we can do this, but we need to know.

Marketing:
• No updates

Safety and Security: Charlene Santee
• Actively ticketing in faculty and staff parking area
• Be sure to use your permit, otherwise you’ll get ticketed
• Question: What is the policy if a student is injured?
• Answer: Call security so they can fill out an accident report.

Staff Development: Marilyn Lees
• November 5- “It’s a Wonderful life, leading through service”. Beth Flynn will be presenting this.
• An email will be sent out next week.

Student Life: John Berry
• Diversity Training will be November 12 at 11:30 am
• There will be two more sessions over the rest of this year.
• 10 COTC students will be selected to go to Italy at the end of July.
o Part of the application package will be a letter of recommendation form from a faculty or staff member.
o 3 week application process
• Question: are the diversity trainings the same as last year?
• Answer: No, they will be different topics.
• Question: What is the reason this trip happened?
• Answer: The benefactor had business in Italy and wanted students to experience that

Derek Thatcher: Entrepreneur Carl Cardi came to campus to speak with students with a marketing class about his local company coolWIRE
